British General says Get Out of Iraq

|

UK General Richard Dannett advises, "Get out of Iraq soon."

I watch CNN a lot and didn't see this reported at all yesterday. But the head of the British army had this to say:

I don't say the difficulties we are experiencing around the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them.

Also

We are in a Muslim country and Muslims' views of foreigners in their country are quite clear ... As a foreigner, you can be welcomed by being invited in a country, but we weren't invited certainly by those in Iraq at the time.

This is a stunning development to have not gotten much media coverage. (Um, where have I heard that before?) Let's see how long this truth-teller keeps his job. If Blair is like Dubya, only incompetence and liars get rewarded.

Story here and here and here.

Update

Apparently General Dannett does want to keep his job. He, at the direction of Blair, issued "somewhat" of a clarification of his comments today.

You jest not

LONDON, Oct. 13 -- Britain's top army commander, who ignited a controversy by saying that British troops should withdraw from Iraq "sometime soon," clarified Friday that he wants a pullout but not until "the mission is substantially done."

That's about as much of an about face as one can offer I think. At least without dressing up in a Union Jack colored orangutan suit and crying fealty for Tony Blair live on the BBC. (I'm sure he offered though)
